Welcome to the 2026 Outdoor Learning Conference
Thursday May 7, 2026 9:00am - 11:30am MDT
Connect with the natural world through free apps from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and field sketching. Before the workshop, please download the Merlin Bird ID app and install the Canada West bird pack along with your local bird packs so you’ll be ready to explore both your community’s birds and those found in Banff. If available, bring binoculars to share and use during the activity.

The Merlin Bird ID app introduces students to bird identification throughout the seasons by asking you a few simple questions, but also by sight and sound. Using billions of eBird observations submitted by community scientists around the world, Merlin predicts which birds are likely nearby based on your location and the time of year.

During this workshop, students will:
Learn the four keys to bird identification (size and shape, color pattern, behavior, and habitat).
Use the app to research and compare local species.
Draw and label a “focus bird” using field marks.
Participate in a guided bird walk to apply their new identification skills outdoors.
This hands-on lesson combines technology, observation, and art to help students build curiosity and confidence as young naturalists.
