About me
Melissa Stacey is a bi-racial educational leader. Her split identity includes her mother’s Sri Lankan culture and her British father’s family influences, mixed into that of living as a first generation immigrant family in Canada. She continues to explore and heal within this identity and through lived experience understands the importance identity plays in child development, wellness and belonging. Growing up both of Melissa’s parents emphasized the importance of the land; through vegetable and flower gardening, camping experiences and world travel. This is deeply ingrained in who Melissa is today.
Melissa’s educational leadership is rooted in sovereignty-affirming, equity-focused leadership competencies, furthermore her beliefs center around the importance of students having learning experiences that are land-based. She has also been recognized for her leadership in promoting outdoor learning spaces in schools and helping school leaders understand how to avoid equity detours.
